How to read this comparison

GDP measures economic output, not personal wealth or living standards. Both GDP figures cover the full year 2025 at current prices. German figures are provisional and converted from euros at the ECB 2025 average of €1 ≈ US$1.1300. This is a market-exchange-rate comparison, not a purchasing-power comparison.

Population uses July 1, 2025 U.S. estimates and German year-end 2025 counts. Area includes land and water and uses U.S. Census 2010 and German 2023 geography; definitions differ. These are scale comparisons, not growth rates. The U.S. territories remain available in the explorer above but are not included here without a matching 2025 GDP series.

German Länder and U.S. states are both constituent units of federal systems, but their powers and institutions differ. Hamburg, Bremen and Berlin are city-states; Bremen includes Bremen and Bremerhaven. D.C. is a federal district, not a state.
